In June 2024, Boydd Products was contacted by a representative of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department in Illinois and informed that one of its “Boydd" shields had sustained multiple gunshots during a tactical operation. Deputy Tad Dominski, the first officer to enter the residence, was met with gunfire and his shield was struck four times, effectively protecting his head, neck, and upper torso. Two additional deputies were also injured during the incident. The suspect was shot by deputies and taken into custody.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle had purchased several Boydd shields in 2019 after visiting the Boydd Products booth at the ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) conference. Sheriff Van Vickle's forward-thinking and dedication to officer safety played a critical role in saving Deputy Dominski’s life nearly five years later.
On August 20, 2024, James Boydd (the inventor of the ballistic shield used) met with Deputy Dominski and spoke with members of the press. Boydd Products no longer produces the shield used in this incident, however this powerful encounter reignited Boydd Products’ commitment to innovation and was instrumental in the development of the all new - Advanced Ballistic Shield (ABS™).
INSPIRED BY A LIFE SAVED

Deputy Tad Dominski & James Boydd
“To be a former officer and to develop something that actually saved the life of another officer is very overwhelming, emotionally inside, because I had to retire early due to a medical injury. But, this is a way I can still contribute to my fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement. Maybe that was my purpose all along.”
